Driver Injured in Tractor-Trailer Underride Crash

Sometimes semi truck accidents are caused by drivers who are not paying attention and do not slow down in time. These situations often lead to rear-end crashes, but in semi trucks, these crashes can be more complex and more dangerous, since smaller vehicles can end up stuck under the trailer.
This is what recently happened in Tennessee. A crash occurred on the morning of November 18 in Clarksville, leading to major emergency response and road closure. The accident took place on Fort Campbell Boulevard near its intersection with Millswood Drive. That was where a Honda Accord collided with the rear of a flatbed tractor-trailer.
Fire crews from Clarksville Fire Rescue Department arrived at the accident scene and found the driver trapped under the trailer near the rear tire. Crews began extricating the victim at approximately 6:15 a.m. and completed the rescue roughly 15 minutes later. The victim was then handed off to EMS and flown to Nashville for further care.
Following the crash, one lane of traffic in both directions on Fort Campbell Boulevard was reopened, allowing traffic flow to resume while investigations were underway.
The condition of the driver has not been released. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
What is an Underride Accident?
An underride accident occurs when a smaller vehicle, such as a car or SUV, slides underneath a larger truck or trailer during a collision. Because commercial trucks and trailers are much taller than passenger vehicles, the front end of a car can pass under the truck, often striking the trailer at windshield or head level rather than at the bumper. This type of collision is particularly dangerous and frequently results in severe injuries or fatalities.
Underride accidents are so severe due to the following reasons:
- Compromised safety features. Modern cars are designed with crumple zones and airbags to protect occupants in crashes, but these safety systems are ineffective when a vehicle goes under a trailer. The impact bypasses the reinforced front end, putting drivers and passengers at extreme risk.
- Risk of entrapment. In many underride collisions, the passenger compartment can be crushed or deformed, trapping occupants and making rescue difficult.
- High fatality rates. Because the collision impacts the upper portion of the car, injuries often involve the head, neck, and chest, increasing the likelihood of life-threatening trauma.
Because of the severity and complexity of these cases, victims should seek experienced legal representation to ensure their rights are protected and to pursue compensation for medical bills, lost income, pain and suffering, and future care needs. While drivers can reduce risk by maintaining safe following distances and staying alert, federal regulations also require that trailers be equipped with rear underride guards.
