Car Pinned Underneath Semi Truck in Memphis Crash

When vehicles collide with larger trucks, the results can be disastrous. A car was recently crushed by a semi truck and trailer in Memphis. While the scene looked devastating, there was no word of any injuries.
The crash occurred on the morning of January 6 on westbound I-40 near Danny Thomas Boulevard. It is unknown how the accident occurred, but it left a car pinned underneath a semi-truck on Interstate 40.
Tennessee Department of Transportation cameras showed an overturned vehicle. A car was crushed by a trailer under a freeway overpass. There were emergency vehicles surrounding the area.
Three of four lanes on the interstate were shut down. There are no details as to how the accidents occurred and if anyone was injured.
Underride Accidents
It is unknown how this crash occurred, but sometimes smaller vehicles are crushed by trucks in what are known as underride accidents. Underride accidents occur when a smaller vehicle slides underneath the rear or side of a large truck or trailer during a collision. These crashes are among the most catastrophic roadway accidents because the top of the passenger vehicle can be crushed or sheared off, leading to severe or fatal injuries. Underride accidents most commonly involve tractor-trailers, box trucks, and other large commercial vehicles.
Unlike standard crashes where bumpers and crumple zones absorb impact, underride accidents bypass most safety features in passenger vehicles. Even at moderate speeds, occupants may suffer traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, internal organ injuries, or instant fatalities. Seat belts and airbags often provide little protection when the vehicle’s cabin is compromised.
There are two types of underride accidents:
- Rear underride accidents often occur when a passenger vehicle crashes into the back of a truck, especially if the truck is stopped or moving slowly.
- Side underride accidents happen when a vehicle strikes the side of a trailer, frequently at intersections or during turns. These are particularly dangerous at night.
Underride crashes can happen for several reasons:
- Lack of proper underride guards: Some trucks are missing rear or side guards, or the guards fail due to poor design or maintenance.
- Poor visibility: Inadequate reflective tape or lighting makes it difficult for drivers to see trailers at night or in low-visibility conditions.
- Sudden stops or turns: Trucks that brake abruptly or make wide turns can create unexpected hazards for nearby drivers.
- Driver fatigue or distraction: Both truck drivers and passenger vehicle drivers may fail to react in time due to inattention or exhaustion.
- Unsafe road conditions: Poor lighting, weather, or roadway design can increase underride risks.
