Fog Leads to Crash Between Semi Truck, Sedan

Even though we are approaching spring, the weather is still a little funky in some parts of the country. Tennessee is still dealing with fog, which can impact visibility and make driving more difficult.

On March 9, early morning fog in Middle Tennessee contributed to a crash involving a semi truck and a passenger vehicle. The crash caused a diesel fuel spill and temporary road closures.

The accident happened on Main Street in Spring Hill, near Rippavilla Plantation. Emergency crews responded after a sedan hit a semi truck that was attempting to make a U-turn in heavy fog.

The impact caused significant damage to the truck’s passenger-side fuel tank. Because the tank was compromised, crews had to carefully remove and secure approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel from the truck to prevent the spill from spreading or creating additional hazards. Firefighters and other responders worked to contain the fuel and clean up the scene.

Authorities closed the northbound portion of Main Street for roughly two hours while emergency personnel managed the fuel spill and cleared damaged vehicles from the roadway. Traffic in the area was diverted until the situation was brought under control and the road could safely reopen.

The driver of the semi truck was not injured in the crash. However, the driver of the sedan suffered minor injuries and received medical attention.

Dangers of Fog

Fog is one of the most dangerous weather conditions for drivers because it significantly reduces visibility and makes it harder to judge distance, speed, and road hazards. Even experienced drivers can struggle when thick fog suddenly appears.

• Difficulty judging distance and speed. Fog distorts depth perception. Objects may appear farther away than they actually are, which can cause drivers to approach traffic or intersections too quickly. This misjudgment increases the likelihood of rear-end collisions and other dangerous situations.
• Hidden road hazards. Fog can conceal important visual cues such as curves, exit ramps, construction zones, or stalled vehicles. Without clear visibility, drivers may not recognize these hazards until they are dangerously close.
