Woman Killed in Crash Caused by Police Chase

Police_Chase

Police chases are among the most dangerous situations on the road. While they are often initiated to apprehend suspects, they can quickly put officers, bystanders, and other drivers at serious risk.

Unfortunately, this recently happened in Nashville. A man had stolen a truck and was being pursued by Metro Nashville Police when he drove into traffic and collided with a car, killing the driver.

The driver of the stolen truck was a 52-year-old man. The man, who has an extensive criminal history, was allegedly out on parole when he stole a Ford F-250 truck from a Nashville car lot. The incident happened on the morning of March 20.

The owner of the lot used the technology in the truck to track it to an alley in North Nashville. He pulled up behind the truck in his own car, but the man put the truck in reverse and collided with the lot owner. Police used a helicopter to follow the man and tracked him to Murfreesboro Pike.

Police intended to keep an eye on the truck until it stopped. Then they would have ground units move in and take the man into custody.

However, before that could happen, the driver spotted an unmarked police car in the median and rammed into it, as well. While the officer in the car was not seriously injured, that started a police pursuit down Murfreesboro Pike. The police chase lasted about five minutes and reached speeds of 80 miles per hour.

The chase ended when the man crossed the intersection of Murfreesboro Pike and Hickory Woods Drive. The man hit a sedan. The impact pushed the sedan about 100 yards into a ditch.

The driver, an unidentified woman in her 20s, died at the accident scene. The man was taken to Vanderbilt Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The man, who was charged with criminal homicide, has a long criminal history. He is a convicted felon with multiple convictions for burglary, theft, and DUI.

The crash shut down part of Murfreesboro Road for several hours. This caused inconvenience, with dozens of people unable to get to their homes.

Police chases are risky. Although police chases are sometimes necessary, they carry a high potential for harm. The combination of speed, unpredictability, and public exposure makes them one of the most hazardous law enforcement activities on the road.

If a chase is nearby, drivers should:

  • Stay calm and alert.
  • Pull over safely when you hear sirens.
  • Avoid sudden moves that could confuse officers or the fleeing driver.
  • Do not attempt to follow or film the chase.
  • Keep a safe distance if you see a pursuit ahead.
