Woman Killed in Crash With Pickup Truck

One wrong move while out on the roadway can lead to a crash. Right of way issues are especially common and can lead to fatal accidents.
Sadly, this was recently the case in Murfreesboro. A 63-year-old woman was killed in a crash with a pickup truck. The fatal accident occurred on July 18 on South Rutherford Boulevard.
According to Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) investigators, the woman was driving a Nissan Altima. She was attempting to turn left onto South Rutherford Boulevard when she hit a Dodge Ram 1500 driven by a 17-year-old boy. The impact caused the truck to veer into oncoming traffic. It then collided with a tree and crashed into a parked car at a nearby apartment complex. The car was unoccupied at the time of the crash.
The accident left the woman trapped inside her vehicle. The Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department was called to the scene to extricate her from the car. She was then airlifted to a local hospital. However, she did not survive her injuries. She died three days later, on July 21.
The teen boy was taken to Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.
A preliminary investigation alleges that the woman failed to yield the right of way. However, FACT is still investigating the accident.
When Right of Way Issues Cause Accidents
When right of way issues cause accidents, they often stem from a failure to understand or obey traffic rules regarding who has the legal right to proceed first. These accidents frequently result in vehicle damage, injuries, and even fatalities.
Right of way issues may occur in the following situations:
- Uncontrolled intersections. Drivers may fail to yield to vehicles already in the intersection or approaching from the right.
- Left turns across traffic. A driver turning left must yield to oncoming vehicles unless they have a protected arrow. Failing to do so often causes T-bone collisions.
- Stop sign violations. A driver who rolls through or misjudges a stop sign may crash into cross traffic with the right of way.
- Pedestrian crosswalks. Drivers failing to yield to pedestrians in marked or unmarked crosswalks can cause serious injuries and face liability.
- Merging or lane changes. Vehicles entering a roadway or changing lanes without yielding can cause side-impact or rear-end collisions.
Right of way violations are strong indicators of fault in an accident. Police reports and traffic camera footage are often used to support claims. A driver may be cited for failure to yield, which can influence insurance claims and lawsuits.
