TikTok Settles Product Liability Lawsuit Over Teen Social Media Addiction

SocialMediaAddiction

When you think of product liability cases, you may imagine defective products or contaminated foods. You may expect physical harm. But what about addictive apps? Can a social media addiction warrant a legal case?

It has and it has been successful. TikTok has settled a major lawsuit on social media addiction before trial. The popular social media company agreed to a settlement in a lawsuit alleging that its platform and others deliberately addict young users and harm their mental health.

The case was brought by a 19-year-old identified by her initials, “KGM”. it targets TikTok alongside Meta’s Instagram and Google’s YouTube, claiming their platforms were engineered to be addictive to children. Snapchat’s parent company, Snap Inc., previously reached its own undisclosed settlement.

Terms of TikTok’s settlement were not made public, and the company has not immediately commented. While TikTok is settling this particular suit, it remains a defendant in related personal-injury cases.

First Jury Trial of Its Kind

Jury selection is underway in Los Angeles County Superior Court, marking the first time these claims will be decided in front of a jury. The outcome could shape thousands of similar lawsuits by families and school districts nationwide.

Plaintiffs allege that such apps use design features modeled on addictive systems, similar to techniques used in slot machines, to keep young users engaged and increase advertising revenue. They argue this contributed to KGM’s depression and suicidal thoughts.

The lawsuits also aim to bypass traditional legal protections for tech platforms, including First Amendment and Section 230 defenses that typically shield companies from liability for user-generated content.

KGM’s case is one of three scheduled test cases, known as bellwether trials, chosen from hundreds of related lawsuits accusing the platforms of harming youth.

Executives from Meta are expected to testify during the trial, which is expected to last 6 to 8 weeks. Observers say the outcome could have major implications for how social media companies handle youth safety.

Tech Companies Reject Allegations

Meta and Google have rejected the claims, saying they’ve added numerous safety measures and arguing that adolescent mental health issues are complex and influenced by many factors beyond social media.

Beyond this trial, more than 40 state attorneys general have filed their own lawsuits against Meta alleging similar harms, and additional trials, including one in federal court involving school districts, are scheduled later this year.
