Driver Not Injured in Lake Crash But Arrested for DUI

_Crash_

It is never fun when a vehicle crashes into a lake. These accidents tend to end badly, with someone getting seriously injured or drowning. Fortunately, a driver of a pickup truck that was submerged in a lake in Tennessee was able to escape without injury. However, he was arrested for DUI.

A truck ended up fully submerged in Tims Ford Lake in Franklin County on the evening of October 4. Emergency crews from the Franklin County EMS & Rescue responded to the scene and found a red truck fully submerged in the lake. Fortunately, it was not too far off the shoreline.

Divers were able to locate the truck while it was underwater. They then secured it so it could be removed from the lake. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.

There were no injuries, as the driver of the truck was able to get out of it unharmed. However, the driver was arrested by Tennessee State Parks Rangers for suspected DUI. The accident is still under investigation.

Vehicle Submersions

A vehicle submersion occurs when a car becomes partially or fully submerged in water, such as during flooding, a river crossing, or a coastal storm. These incidents are extremely dangerous, often leaving occupants with little time to escape. Vehicle submersions are among the leading causes of drowning-related deaths in motor vehicle accidents.

Common causes include:

  • Accidents near water bodies. Cars may unintentionally leave the roadway near lakes, rivers, or ponds, especially at night or in poor visibility.
  • Flooded roads. Driving through water that appears shallow can be deceptive; just 6 to 12 inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle away.
  • Bridges or low-lying areas. Heavy rain or storm surges can unexpectedly flood underpasses, river crossings, or poorly drained roads.
  • Vehicle malfunctions. Engine failure, brake issues, or stalling can leave a car stranded in rising water.

Submersion is dangerous and even deadly. If a vehicle occupant does not exit the vehicle quickly, the following risks can occur:

  • Rapid flooding inside the vehicle. Water can rise quickly, making it difficult to open doors or windows.
  • Electrical and mechanical hazards. Modern vehicles may short-circuit or lose power, trapping occupants.
  • Cold water shock. Sudden immersion in cold water can lead to involuntary gasping, panic, or hypothermia.
  • Drowning risk. Many fatalities occur because occupants are unable to exit in time.

In this case, you need to act quickly. The first 30 to 60 seconds after submersion are critical.

Exit through windows if you can, as power windows may still work; if not, break the glass with an emergency tool. Remove seatbelts quickly to free yourself for escape. If traveling with passengers, assist them if you can.
