Candy Recalled Over Labeling Error

Candy is known to be bad for you, but if contaminated, it can cause serious illnesses. A popular candy sold in Tennessee and various stores around the country has been recalled due to a life-threatening risk. Consumers may suffer a severe allergic reaction due to a labeling error.
Lipari Foods has issued a recall of its JLM branded “Dark Chocolate Nonpareils food treats” after it was determined it could contain milk that was not declared on the packaging. The recall notice was shared June 20 by the Food & Drug Administration. It was discovered that the potential milk-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of milk.
This error means consumers with milk allergies have a higher risk of developing a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they eat the contaminated candy. The impacted product, sold in 14-ounce clear plastic tubs, was distributed to retail stores nationwide. They include any of the following lot numbers, which are located on the bottom label:
- 28202501A
- 29202501A
- 23202504A
- 14202505A
- 15202505A
- 03202506A
As of June 20, there have been no reported illnesses in connection with the recall. Consumers who purchased the affected product can return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Those who have questions about the recall can contact the company at (586) 447-3500 ext. 9720.
When milk is not declared on a product’s packaging, it typically results in a Class I food recall which is the most serious type. This is because undeclared milk poses a major health risk to those who have a milk allergy. Affected products need to be recalled immediately.
Why is this so dangerous? Milk is one of the top nine allergens in the United States. Even trace amounts can trigger severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening. Consumers with milk allergies rely on accurate labels to avoid exposure.
When milk is not declared on a product’s packaging, it is often due to the following issues:
- Labeling errors (such as using the wrong packaging)
- Cross-contamination during production
- Reformulated recipes where milk was added but not updated on the label
Fortunately, food recalls often occur before the affected product has caused major harm. However, consumers may have already purchased the product so they should be wary of any recall. Consumers should know which products are at risk and which are still safe to consume. If you have purchased a recalled product, you can typically return it for a full refund. So if you come across a recall, it’s something to take seriously.
