1 Killed When Car Crashes Into Red River

The impact from a crash can do a lot of crazy things. It can knock a vehicle right off the road and cause it to collide with a tree, pole, or even a large body of water.
This was recently the case in Tennessee. A crash in Clarksville caused a vehicle to go off the road and into the Red River. Sadly, the driver was killed in the crash. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of November 13.
According to the Clarksville Police Department, a vehicle had crashed into the river from I-24 Westbound near mile marker 9. Clarksville Fire Rescue arrived on the scene and confirmed that one car was in the river. Crews with Clarksville Fire Rescue worked to assist with patient recovery but confirmed that one person had died. That person was a 52-year-old man from Tennessee.
The initial accident occurred between two vehicles. A Lincoln Town Car and a Jeep were heading west on I-24 when the Lincoln struck the Jeep. Both vehicles then ran into the median, but the Jeep continued down an embankment before coming to a stop in the Red River. The driver died in the crash.
Charges are pending for the driver of the Lincoln Town Car. The westbound lanes were closed for several hours as crews conducted recovery operations, cleared debris, and documented the scene. Drivers were redirected to alternate routes, resulting in significant backups during the morning commute.
Authorities are working to determine the cause of the crash. Additional information will be released once the investigation is complete.
Force and Impact of a Car Crash
When two vehicles collide, the human body continues moving at the vehicle’s original speed until something stops it, such as a seat belt, airbag, steering wheel, dashboard, or the road itself. The sudden deceleration creates extreme forces that the body is not built to withstand. Even at 30 to 40 mph, a crash can generate thousands of pounds of pressure.
Common physical effects on the body include:
- Whiplash: Rapid back-and-forth snapping of the neck strains muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Even low-speed crashes can cause significant neck injuries.
- Traumatic brain injuries: The brain can slam against the skull, causing concussions, bleeding, or long-term cognitive issues.
- Fractures: Arms, legs, ribs, and facial bones can break from hitting interior surfaces or from the vehicle collapsing inward.
- Spinal cord injuries: The energy of impact can compress, twist, or fracture the spine, leading to herniated discs, nerve damage, or paralysis.
There are also effects on the vehicle. Rolling multiplies force with every rotation, causing ejection risks and catastrophic structural failures. Also, secondary impacts are common. After the initial collision, vehicles often hit other objects, increasing cumulative force.
