Woman Injured in Monroe County Dog Attack

DogAttacking

Dogs are not always friendly. Pit bulls and mixes can be mean and dangerous dogs, as they account for a large number of dog bites and attacks.

A Tennessee woman was seriously injured in a recent attack in Monroe County. The incident happened on September 6 on Fairview Road, outside of Madisonville. Several people were arrested after the attack, which left the 71-year-old woman unconscious.

A Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy went to the house on Fairview Road and found a woman lying unconscious on her porch. She suffered lacerations and other injuries to her arms, legs, head, and ears. The woman finally woke up and told police she had been attacked by dogs running loose. It is believed that she was attacked by as many as 15 dogs.

The deputy did see several dogs loose. He called EMS, who took the woman to University of Tennessee Hospital for medical treatment.

Three people corralled the dogs and got them back into their house. A witness then said the dogs belonged to two of those people. They claimed they saw the dogs attacking the woman and got the dogs off her, but the dogs followed her back to her house.

Four people all live at the house and had control of the dogs. The deputy saw pallets with chicken wire around them at the house. They appeared to act as some sort of fence, but all of the pallets weren’t enclosed, allowing the dogs to escape.

Apparently the owners have had trouble with their dogs in the past. Several dogs have been removed from the home in the past 18 months. Law enforcement removed 27 dogs from the property following the incident, including puppies. All of the dogs involved were pitbull mixes.

The four dog owners are facing a Class E felony for having animals at large causing serious injury as well as 16 counts of animal cruelty. All were taken to jail. While at the jail, one woman was searched and police found suspected meth and a glass smoking pipe on her. The woman is now facing additional charges of possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, and introduction of contraband into a penal facility.

It was also discovered that one of the men is a convicted sex offender. The man had not recently informed authorities of his whereabouts, so he was in violation of the sex offender registry and faces additional charges and penalties. The victim’s current medical condition is unknown.
