Parents of 18-Year-Old Shot in SWAT Raid File Federal Wrongful Death Lawsuit

When a child is killed by law enforcement, parents grieve. They also want to seek justice and understand their legal options.
The parents of an 18-year-old man who was fatally shot by members of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team have filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against Knox County, a sheriff, and 15 unnamed officers. The lawsuit alleges that their son’s death resulted from an unconstitutional and reckless law enforcement operation.
The young man was killed in the early morning hours of January 3, 2025, when deputies executed a raid on his South Knoxville home. According to the lawsuit, the SWAT team entered the residence around 7 a.m. without announcing themselves and used overwhelming force that caused the man to be shot nine times. The lawsuit alleges the officers lacked probable cause to justify the use of such a militarized response.
The search warrant used to authorize the raid was based largely on a detective’s review of the man’s Instagram posts that reportedly referenced alleged drug sales. Despite this, the man’s family contends these posts did not provide sufficient grounds for a SWAT deployment or a predawn entry. The suit argues that social media activity alone should not have been the basis for such a high-risk tactic.
The man’s parents claim officers failed to properly identify themselves, did not have clear evidence of criminal activity at the home, and used excessive force that was disproportionate to any alleged offense. They also assert that deputies demonstrated “reckless indifference” by delaying or denying critical medical care after he was wounded.
The family is seeking approximately $600,000 in damages, which they say would cover funeral and related expenses, loss of future earnings, emotional distress, and other harms resulting from their son’s death. They have also asked for a jury trial to hold the defendants accountable.
The incident was previously investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and findings were submitted to District Attorney General Charme Allen. It was decided not to charge the involved deputies, citing their actions as self-defense. However, the civil lawsuit challenges that determination and seeks to examine the conduct and decision-making of law enforcement more closely.
The man’s family has also drawn national attention and enlisted civil rights attorneys to help pursue justice and accountability, arguing that the full circumstances of the raid and shooting have not been transparently disclosed. They maintain that significant questions remain about whether their son’s constitutional rights were violated during a raid that stemmed solely from a social media investigation.
