Driver Arrested After Crashing into Power Poles

Motorists need to be careful when driving. It’s always safest to stay on the road and not veer off and hit power poles.
This is what recently happened in Murfreesboro. A man went off the road and crashed into several power poles, causing vehicle damage, injuries, and power outages.
The 28-year-old man was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee when he reportedly crashed into multiple power poles on the morning of June 6. The crash caused electrical wires to hang low across NW Broad near Medical Center Parkway. The accident also caused a power outage, forcing NW Broad Street to close for hours.
After the man was treated for his injuries and discharged from a local hospital, Murfreesboro Police Department arrested him. He is now facing multiple criminal charges, including DUI and possession of a handgun while under the influence.
Other vehicles were affected by the accident. A dump truck stopped just before the low-hanging wires and drove under them. This caused damage to two electric poles, two telephone poles, and multiple live wires. Fortunately, the dump truck driver was not injured.
Another driver was involved in an accident while trying to cross NW Broad Street from Medical Center Parkway. Her car sustained significant damage, but she was not injured in the crash.
Dangers of Crashing Into a Power Pole
Crashing into a power pole presents several serious dangers, such as the following:
- Electrocution risk. Power lines may fall onto the vehicle or surrounding area, posing a risk of electrocution. Even if lines appear inactive, they may still carry a lethal charge.
- Fire hazard. The impact can cause electrical sparks or ruptured fuel lines, increasing the risk of fire or explosion.
- Live wire danger. Anyone exiting the vehicle may come into contact with live wires on the ground, leading to severe or fatal injuries.
- Traffic hazards. Downed lines or damaged poles can block roadways and create secondary accidents.
- Power outages. Widespread outages may occur, affecting homes, traffic signals, and emergency services.
Staying safe after crashing into a power pole is critical, especially due to the risk of electrocution. You need to stay calm so you save your life as well as the lives of others who may be involved. Here are some steps to take:
- Stay inside the vehicle. Unless the car is on fire or you’re in immediate danger, do not exit the vehicle. Downed power lines may be touching the car or the ground nearby, and exiting could complete an electrical circuit, causing serious injury or death.
- Call 911 immediately. Report the crash and let them know you may be near or in contact with live power lines. Describe your location, any visible sparks or fires, and if anyone is injured or trapped.
