Bicyclist Killed in Hit and Run Crash

Riding a bicycle is great for exercise but it’s not so great when it comes to safety. Drivers of motor vehicles don’t always see these bicyclists, causing them to hit them. If that’s not bad enough, some drivers flee the accident scene for various reasons, leaving these bicyclists for dead.
Sadly, this was the fate of a bicycle rider in Tennessee. The bicyclist was killed in a hit and run crash in Antioch on the evening of May 21. The accident occurred in the 600 block of Bell Road, outside the Preakness apartment complex.
A 23-year-old woman from Nashville was crossing Bell Road on an electric bike when she was hit by a dark-colored sedan that was heading west.
The sedan did not stop. It reportedly sped off, running several red lights. It was last seen near the Interstate 24 and Bell Road interchange.
The bicyclist was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she later died. Investigators are trying to obtain evidence that will help them identify the vehicle and driver. The accident is still under investigation.
Dangers of Bicycle Accidents
Bicycles are fun but dangerous to ride due to the lack of protection. Here are some dangers of bicycle crashes:
- Head injuries. A rider can suffer concussions or traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), especially without a helmet. These can lead to long-term cognitive issues or permanent disability.
- Fractures and broken bones. These fractures commonly affect the collarbone, wrists, arms, ribs, and legs. They may require surgery and extended rehabilitation.
- Spinal cord injuries. These injuries can result in partial or complete paralysis in severe cases. Recovery is often limited and may require lifelong care.
- Internal injuries. A rider may suffer damage to organs such as the liver, spleen, or lungs. Internal bleeding may not be immediately apparent and can be life-threatening.
- Road rash and lacerations. These are caused by sliding across pavement during a fall. There is a risk of infection or scarring if not properly treated.
A bicycle accident can also cause emotional distress. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common. Riders may experience anxiety, nightmares, or flashbacks after a crash. There may also be a fear of riding again. Many cyclists lose confidence or avoid cycling altogether after an accident.
There are also financial implications to consider. Medical bills can be costly. You will need to consider emergency care, surgery, physical therapy, and medication costs. If you have to miss work, there will also be lost wages. Time off work due to injury can cause financial strain.
