5 Injured in Head-on Crash

CarWreck

Three vehicles were involved in a recent crash that injured five people. The accident occurred on the evening of April 22 in Murfreesboro.

The Murfreesboro Police Department arrived at a crash on Veterans Parkway at Highway 99.

The accident was described as a head-on crash. The driver of a Buick Enclave moved into a lane of oncoming traffic for unknown reasons. The Buick was able to evade one vehicle, but it ultimately collided head-on with a Toyota Highlander.

The impact caused  the Toyota Highlander to spin out and collide with a Cadillac Escalade. Two people were trapped inside the Toyota Highlander. Crews with the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department extricated one adult from the vehicle. A Good Samaritan was able to rescue an infant in a child restraint from the same vehicle.

In total, five people were taken to local hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to more serious. Highway 99 was closed in both directions for quite some time. Traffic was diverted onto Old Salem Road. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Fatal Accident Crash Team.

Causes of Head-on Crashes

Here’s a breakdown of the most common causes of head-on crashes:

  • Distracted driving. The biggest cause. Looking at a phone, eating, or adjusting the radio can make a driver drift into the wrong lane.
  • Impaired driving. Alcohol, drugs, or even prescription meds can slow reaction time and cause drivers to veer off course.
  • Fatigue/drowsy driving. Falling asleep at the wheel is a major reason for crossing into oncoming traffic, especially late at night or early morning.
  • Speeding and losing control. Going too fast around curves or sharp turns can cause drivers to swing into the opposite lane.
  • Improper passing. Trying to pass when there’s not enough time or space, especially on two-lane highways, often leads to deadly head-on collisions.
  • Bad weather/road conditions. Rain, ice, snow, or even poorly marked roads can cause drivers to slide into oncoming traffic.
  • Mechanical failures. Tire blowouts, brake failures, or steering malfunctions can cause a sudden swerve across the center line.

Fortunately, drivers can do their part to prevent head-on collisions by doing the following:

  • Stay alert. Keep your eyes on the road and avoid distractions like texting or eating.
  • Don’t drive drowsy If you’re tired, pull over and rest.
  • Never drive impaired. Avoid alcohol, drugs, or anything that affects your focus.
  • Slow down around curves. Especially on unfamiliar or rural roads.
  • Pass safely. Only pass when you have clear visibility and plenty of space.
  • Adjust for weather. Drive slower and more carefully in rain, snow, or fog,
  • Maintain your vehicle. Regularly check tires, brakes, and steering systems.
