2 Killed in 2 Crashes on Interstate 40

Car_SideImpact

Car accidents can happen anywhere, but sometimes they happen in the same area within minutes of each other. That was what recently happened in Tennessee, and as a result, two people were killed.

On the morning of December 11, there were two separate crashes at the same mile marker on Interstate 40 in Wilson County. The accidents happened just after midnight in the eastbound lanes near the Golden Bear Gateway exit, which is mile marker 229.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, troopers were called to two crashes at the same location. While the accidents happened within minutes of each other, It was determined the crashes were unrelated. It is believed that at least one person was killed in each crash.

Drivers were diverted at the Beckwith Road exit until the road reopened to traffic around eight hours later. The causes of both crashes are under investigation.

Common Causes of Car Accidents

Car accidents occur for many reasons, but most are tied to preventable human behaviors, poor decision-making, or hazardous roadway conditions. Understanding the most frequent causes can help drivers stay safer and also clarify how liability is determined in personal injury cases.

  • Distracted driving. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of crashes in the United States. Even a two-second glance away can cause a driver to drift, miss hazards, or fail to react in time. Distractions include:
    • Texting or using a cellphone.
    • Adjusting navigation or in-car technology.
    • Eating, grooming, or reaching for objects.
    • Conversing with passengers.
  • Driving above the speed limit greatly increases stopping distance, crash severity, and loss of vehicle control. Speeding reduces the driver’s ability to react to sudden hazards and is a major contributor to fatal collisions.
  • Impaired driving. Driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or even certain prescription medications can impair judgment, reaction time, coordination, and vision.
  • Aggressive driving. Aggressive or reckless behaviors frequently lead to collisions. These include tailgating, weaving in and out of lanes, failing to yield, and running red lights or stop signs.
  • Failure to yield. Many crashes occur when drivers make unsafe left turns, merge improperly, or enter intersections without right-of-way. Yielding mistakes often lead to T-bone collisions, which can cause severe injuries.
  • Weather conditions. Rain, fog, snow, and ice can reduce visibility and traction. Drivers must adjust their speed and behavior to match road conditions. Common weather-caused crashes involve:
    • Hydroplaning.
    • Skidding.
    • Loss of control on curves.
    • Sliding through intersections.
