2 Killed, 39 Injured in Bus Crash

Two people were killed and nearly 40 others injured in a Greyhound bus crash on a highway in western Tennessee, authorities confirmed. The collision occurred on the evening of May 26 along Highway 70 East in Madison County, near Jackson.
The bus was traveling from Memphis to Nashville at the time of the accident. The Tennessee Highway Patrol stated the crash involved a passenger vehicle and a Greyhound bus. They confirmed that there were two fatalities and multiple injuries. Officials have not yet disclosed how the crash happened but plan to release a preliminary report.
Fire rescue crews reported that 39 individuals were injured, with 27 transported to medical facilities for treatment. Responders from multiple agencies, including the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, and MedCenter EMS, assisted at the scene.
A Greyhound spokesperson said the bus was en route from Memphis to Nashville and carried 32 passengers, one driver, and a relief driver. Thirty people were hospitalized, and most were released shortly after the crash. Greyhound is actively investigating and supporting all involved. Since 41 people in total were involved, it remains unclear if the additional injured individuals were from the other vehicle.
Fire and rescue did not say exactly what caused the crash. Multiple agencies responded to the accident, including the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and MedCenter EMS. An investigation is still underway.
Causes of Bus Accidents
Bus accidents can result from a wide range of causes, such as the following:
- Driver fatigue. Long shifts and overnight routes are common with bus drivers. These factors can lead to drowsy driving, which impairs reaction time and judgment.
- Speeding. Bus drivers need to take things slow. Exceeding speed limits, especially on curves or in poor weather, increases crash risk.
- Distracted driving. Being alert is important. Being on a phone, eating, using the navigation, or talking to passengers can divert a driver’s attention.
- Mechanical failure. Proper maintenance is important. Faulty brakes, worn tires, or other equipment issues may lead to loss of control.
- Poor weather conditions. Weather can play a role. Rain, fog, or snow can reduce visibility and road traction, increasing accident risk.
- Improper maintenance. Inadequate inspection or delayed repairs can make buses unsafe to operate.
- Other drivers. Other drivers may not know how to drive safely. Reckless or inattentive motorists around the bus may cause collisions.
- Road hazards. Potholes, construction zones, or debris can contribute to accidents.
- Inadequate training. Buses are much larger than passenger vehicles and require adequate training to handle. Bus drivers lacking proper certification or experience may struggle with handling.
