Mt. Juliet Man Killed in Motorcycle Crash

MotorcycleAccidentCrash

When motorcycles collide with larger vehicles such as pickup trucks, the outcome is usually catastrophic or fatal. Sadly, a man was recently killed in a motorcycle crash in Tennessee after hitting a pickup.

The fatal crash happened near a Hermitage Walmart on the evening of April 25. The crash, which happened in the 4400 block of Lebanon Pike, resulted in the death of a 47-year-old man from Mt. Juliet.

A Toyota Tundra had pulled out of the Walmart parking lot to turn east on Lebanon Pike. That was when a Suzuki motorcycle that was heading west rear-ended the truck on the driver’s side.

The impact caused life-threatening injuries. The motorcyclist was transported to TriStar Skyline Medical Center, where he later died. The driver and passenger in the truck were not injured in the crash. Police say the motorcycle’s speed was likely a contributing factor in the crash.

Motorcycles and Speed

Motorcycles are typically lighter and more agile than cars, allowing for faster acceleration and greater maneuverability. Sport bikes, in particular, are built for high speed and cornering. Top performance models can often exceed 150 miles per hour.

While going this fast can be fun and exhilarating, it is also very dangerous. The combination of high speed and limited physical protection also makes motorcyclists more vulnerable in crashes. Because of this, safety gear and responsible riding are crucial.

Many fatal motorcycle crashes involve speeding as a primary factor. Motorcycle speed significantly contributes to accidents due to a combination of reduced reaction time, loss of control, and increased impact force. At higher speeds, riders have less time to react to road hazards, traffic changes, or sudden stops. High speeds also increase the likelihood of crashing. In addition, excessive speed results in an increased force of impact in the event of a crash, causing injuries to magnify in severity.

Many motorcycle accidents result in fatalities. Those who survive often suffer from serious injuries such as:

  • Head injuries. A rider can suffer concussions and traumatic brain injuries, especially when not wearing a helmet.
  • Road rash. Road rash refers to skin abrasions caused by sliding on pavement, which can range from mild to severe.
  • Fractures. Broken bones are common in motorcycle crashes, particularly in the arms, legs, ribs, and collarbones.
  • Spinal injuries. A rider can be ejected in a crash. This can cause them to land on their back and suffer damage to the spinal cord or vertebrae. This can lead to paralysis.
  • Internal injuries. A person can suffer internal bleeding or damage to organs from blunt force trauma or penetration.
