Potato Chip Recall Affects Tennessee, 4 Other States

Potato chips are a yummy snack but they can cause life-threatening illnesses and allergies if they have defects in any way. A manufacturing or packaging error can introduce allergens into a food product, causing potentially life-threatening conditions for consumers.
This is the case for a potato chip distributor. Saratoga Potato Chips LLC is recalling some J. HIGGS brand loaded bacon and cheddar potato chips due to potential undeclared soy allergen concerns. The company recalled the chips on September 16, 2026, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent out an alert two days later to warn consumers.
The recalled chips were distributed to Save A Lot stores in Tennessee, as well, as Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, and Ohio. The recalled product has a UPC code number of 0-51933-31645-4 and best-by dates of December 11, 2026, and December 18, 2026. The chips are sold in 7.75-ounce packages.
The issue was identified through company review, Fortunately, no injuries or illnesses have been reported due to the allergen concerns. However, consumers should be careful if they have food allergies, as they run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these chips.
Those who have purchased the recalled chips can return them to the original place of purchase and receive a full refund. Consumers with additional questions can call Saratoga Potato Chips LLC at (260) 969-0066.
Symptoms of Food Allergies
Millions of Americans experience food allergies or sensitivities. The most common food allergens in the United States are tree nuts, peanuts, eggs, milk, fish, crustacean shellfish, wheat, sesame, and soybeans.
Food allergies occur when the immune system mistakenly identifies a protein in a particular food as harmful. Food allergies and food intolerances are not the same. A food allergy involves an immune system response and can cause anaphylaxis. A food intolerance generally does not involve the immune system and may instead cause digestive symptoms such as bloating, gas, or diarrhea.
Symptoms can develop within minutes to several hours after eating the triggering food. Common reactions include:
- Hives or itchy skin
- Redness or flushing
- Swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or throat
- Tingling or itching in the mouth
- Stomach pain or cramps
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Coughing or wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency. Warning signs may include:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Significant swelling of the tongue or throat
- Wheezing or severe coughing
- A sudden drop in blood pressure
- Weak or rapid pulse
- Severe dizziness or fainting
- Confusion
- Pale or bluish skin
- Loss of consciousness
If anaphylaxis is suspected, seek emergency medical care immediately.
