1 Killed, 3 Injured in Pedestrian Crash in Nashville

Pedestrians need to be careful when walking in streets. Motorists are not always looking out for their best interests. They may be inexperienced, intoxicated, or possibly dealing with something beyond their control, like a medical emergency.

One person was killed and three people were injured in a pedestrian crash at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Broadway in downtown Nashville. The fatal accident occurred on August 1.

Police identified the pedestrian who died as a 58-year-old man from Australia. The three other pedestrians injured in the crash were identified as a 44-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida, a 58-year-old woman from Parsons, Tennessee, and a 21-year-old woman from Knoxville, Tennessee. The 21-year-old woman was treated at a hospital and discharged the next day. The other two were still in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

According to police, an 87-year-old man from Bowling Green, Kentucky, was driving a Ford Fusion when he ran a red light at the intersection. The vehicle struck the pedestrians as they were crossing the street with the walk signal.

Investigators have not determined why the man entered the intersection. Police are considering whether he may have experienced a medical emergency, but he has not yet been interviewed by investigators

The man remains hospitalized in stable condition. His 90-year-old wife, who was riding in the front passenger seat, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

A caregiver who was sitting in the back seat was not injured. She told officers she had been looking at her phone when the crash occurred. The investigation remains ongoing. It is unknown whether any criminal charges will be filed.

Safety Concerns on Broadway

The deadly crash has renewed attention on pedestrian safety in downtown Nashville. The Tennessee Department of Transportation said it has been discussing the potential installation of bollards along Broadway, also known as State Route 1, with Metro Nashville and the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. Discussions are focused on evaluating ways to improve safety for pedestrians, motorists and businesses along the busy downtown corridor.

The Downtown Partnership also said incidents such as the crash warrant additional safety evaluations. Bollards could eventually be installed along Broadway. However, safety measures such as pedestrian signals, improved lighting, traffic-calming measures and physical barriers may help reduce the risk of serious pedestrian collisions.

Dangers of Pedestrian Crashes

Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable in collisions with motor vehicles because they lack the protection provided by a vehicle’s structure, seat belts and airbags. Even at relatively low speeds, a vehicle striking a pedestrian can cause traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, spinal cord injuries and other serious or fatal injuries.

Intersections can be especially dangerous when drivers fail to obey traffic signals or do not yield to pedestrians who have the right of way.
