Wilson County Man Killed in Crash After Running Red Light

RedLight

Running a red light is a dangerous maneuver. It’s an action that can seriously injure or kill someone.

Sadly, this was recently the case in Nashville. A Wilson County man was killed in a crash after reportedly running a red light. The fatal crash happened on the afternoon of June 29.

Officers from the Metro Nashville Police Department responded to Briley Parkway at the East Thompson Lane intersection for reports of a multi-vehicle crash. A 47-year-old man was traveling eastbound on Thompson Lane/Briley Parkway. He was driving a Chevrolet Silverado at a high rate of speed and drove through a red light.

At the same time, a Honda Accord was traveling north on Southlake Drive on a green light. It entered the intersection and was hit by the Chevrolet.

The Silverado driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The Honda driver and passenger were both wearing seatbelts. The driver was not injured, while the passenger suffered minor injuries.

Toxicology testing will be conducted to determine whether impairment contributed to the fatal crash. The collision closed Briley Parkway for several hours, but it has since reopened.

Dangers of Running a Red Light

Running a red light is a reckless and dangerous traffic violation that puts lives at serious risk. Every year, thousands of people are injured or killed in red-light-related crashes across the United States. Common dangers include:

  • High-impact collisions. The most common result of running a red light is a T-bone (or broadside) collision, where one vehicle strikes the side of another. These crashes are particularly severe because the sides of vehicles offer less protection than the front or rear. Side-impact crashes often occur at full speed and give little time for either driver to react, significantly increasing the risk of critical injuries or death.
  • Pedestrian and bicyclist danger. Intersections are also used by pedestrians and cyclists, many of whom cross on a walk signal corresponding to green lights. A driver who runs a red light may strike someone crossing legally, resulting in catastrophic or fatal injuries.
  • Chain-reaction crashes. A single red-light violation can trigger multi-vehicle pileups, particularly in high-traffic areas. When one car runs a light and causes a crash, nearby vehicles may swerve or brake suddenly, leading to additional collisions and injuries.
  • Legal and financial consequences. Running a red light can lead to hefty fines, points on your license, insurance premium hikes, and even criminal charges if someone is seriously injured or killed. In many states, fatal crashes involving red-light running can result in manslaughter charges, especially if the driver is impaired or speeding.
