Knoxville Woman Killed in ATV Crash

People of all ages enjoy riding ATVs. These four-wheeled motorcycles are great for traversing rocky or hilly terrain. They are often used by people with vast amounts of property.
While many people ride ATVs, not all know how to do so safely. Many riders lose control and crash, causing serious injuries or even fatalities.
Sadly, a woman was recently killed in an ATV crash in Jefferson County. Deputies responded to a home on State Route 92 on the evening of June 28 after receiving reports of an ATV crash. A preliminary investigation found that the rider, a 56-year-old woman, was driving an ATV downhill on private property when she lost control and crashed into a utility pole.
The woman and a passenger were taken from the scene by family members and met emergency crews nearby. Both victims were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. The woman later died from her injuries, while the passenger was treated and released. Investigators said neither person was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigation Division is continuing to investigate the incident. Officials extended their condolences to Wheeler’s family and loved ones as they mourn her loss.
Dangers of Riding ATVs
ATVs are popular for recreation, farming, hunting, and work, but they also present significant safety risks. Their high center of gravity, powerful engines, and ability to travel over uneven terrain make them more difficult to control than many riders realize. ATV crashes often result in severe injuries or fatalities, especially when riders do not wear protective gear or operate the vehicle improperly.
One of the most common causes of ATV accidents is a rollover. ATVs can tip over when traveling on steep slopes, making sharp turns, or crossing uneven ground. A rollover can pin a rider beneath the vehicle, causing crushing injuries or death.
Common injuries from ATV accidents include:
- Head and brain injuries. Traumatic brain injuries are among the most serious consequences of ATV crashes. Riders who do not wear helmets face a much higher risk of skull fractures, concussions, and fatal head injuries.
- Spinal cord injuries. High-speed crashes and rollovers can cause severe neck and back injuries, including spinal cord damage that may result in partial or complete paralysis.
- Broken bones. ATV accidents frequently cause fractures to the arms, legs, ribs, pelvis, and collarbone. Riders often instinctively extend their arms during a fall, increasing the risk of wrist and arm fractures.
- Internal injuries. The force of a collision or rollover can damage internal organs and cause life-threatening internal bleeding, even when there are few visible external injuries.
Many ATV accidents are preventable. Safe riding practices, proper equipment, and responsible operation can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury or death.
