3 Injured in Dog Attack in Nashville

Dog6

Dog attacks can happen unexpectedly and may result in serious physical injuries, emotional trauma, and financial losses. While many dogs are friendly and well-trained, any dog can bite or attack under certain circumstances. Even a neighbor’s dog that may be known to you can still attack you for any reason.

This recently happened in Nashville. A dog attack injured three people, including a young child. The attack happened on the evening of July 8.

Medics from the Nashville Fire Department responded to the scene in the 1200 block of Anduin Avenue. Three people were injured after they were attacked by a neighbor’s pit bull. All three, identified as a 40-year-old man, 25-year-old woman, and a 4-year-old child, were taken to a local hospital with dog bite injuries.

Both Metro Nashville Police and Metro Animal Care and Control responded to the scene. The attack is under investigation.

What to Know About Dog Attacks

Millions of dog bites occur each year in the United States. While many injuries are minor, thousands of people require emergency medical treatment, and some attacks lead to permanent injuries or even death. Children, older adults, and people who regularly interact with dogs, such as delivery drivers and veterinary workers, are at a higher risk.

Dogs may bite or attack for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Fear or anxiety
  • Protecting their owner, puppies, food, or territory
  • Pain or illness
  • Feeling startled or threatened
  • Poor socialization
  • History of aggressive behavior
  • Frustration or overstimulation

Understanding canine body language can often help prevent an attack before it occurs. A dog may display several warning signs before attacking, including:

  • Growling or snarling
  • Baring its teeth
  • Raised fur along its back
  • Stiff body posture
  • Intense staring
  • Barking aggressively
  • Lunging
  • Tail held high and rigid

Dog attacks can cause a wide range of injuries, such as:

  • Deep puncture wounds
  • Lacerations
  • Broken bones
  • Nerve damage
  • Facial injuries
  • Eye injuries
  • Crush injuries
  • Infections, including rabies or tetanus concerns
  • Scarring and disfigurement
  • Psychological trauma, including anxiety and PTSD

If you are bitten by a dog, you need to protect your health as well as your legal rights. Take the following steps:

  • Get away from the dog safely.
  • Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Apply pressure if bleeding.
  • Seek medical attention, especially for deep wounds or bites to the face or hands.
  • Ask for the dog’s vaccination information if possible.
  • Report the attack to your local animal control agency or health department.
  • Document your injuries with photographs.
  • Save medical records and expenses.
