10 Injured in Head-on Crash in Mt. Juliet

It is important for drivers to stay in their lane and travel in the correct direction. Otherwise, they can cause head-on collisions.
This recently happened in Tennessee. A head-on crash involving two cards occurred on the afternoon of November 29 in Mt. Juliet. The accident was so severe that it triggered a “mass casualty” alert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
The collision occurred on Central Pike near John Wright Road, close to Springdale Elementary School.
According to the Mt. Juliet Police Department, officers had received word of a stolen vehicle. A patrol unit near the school saw the speeding car, and a pursuit was briefly attempted by an officer from Metro Nashville Police Department before it entered Mt. Juliet. However, the chase was discontinued.
Shortly afterward, a Mt. Juliet police officer discovered the stolen vehicle, now crashed and on fire. Two occupants from that car, a male and a female, were rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, eight people from the other vehicle were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The police chief stated that “Our prayers are with everyone impacted by this tragic incident.” he added that it is “heartbreaking that a suspect’s reckless choice put so many in harm’s way.”
Authorities closed the roadway for hours as police investigated the scene. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is now leading the investigation.
Police chases are dangerous because they combine high speeds, unpredictable behavior, and rapidly changing environments. At high speeds, both officers and fleeing drivers have less reaction time and an increased likelihood of losing control.
It is also important to be aware of unpredictable suspect behavior. Drivers fleeing police often run red lights, drive on the wrong side of the road, and ignore pedestrians and traffic.
What is a Mass Casualty Alert?
A mass casualty alert is a hospital or emergency-response notification that signals a large number of injured patients are expected to arrive at once, more than what the facility typically handles at a normal pace.
A mass casualty alert indicates:
- Multiple victims are coming from a single incident (like a major crash, explosion, or natural disaster).
- Hospitals activate surge protocols, preparing extra staff, opening additional trauma bays, and securing equipment.
- EMS agencies coordinate triage, deciding which patients go where based on injury severity.
A mass casualty alert is not a declaration of disaster, but it does warn medical teams to expect an unusually heavy and urgent workload. Hospitals use it to make sure life-saving resources are ready before patients arrive and to speed up treatment by having doctors, nurses, and trauma teams in place. It is also used to prevent the emergency department from being overwhelmed.
